Independent Film Pioneer, Kenneth Anger dies at 96

Kenneth Anger’s persona and personal films are creepy as it gets, but he made some of the most elaborate stop-motion animation sequences in the history of cinema — using human beings, open sets, and custom, motion-controlled cameras.

Filmmaker Stan Brakhage would show these films at Boulder Public Library and up at the college in the years I knew him. Anger’s films cost a small fortune to produce, as did most independent films of the day. Brakhage was the exception whose methods were always on the cheap, leaving it to his technical partners to orchestrate the work into longer, more visually interesting art films.
